Demanding World-Class Educational Opportunities

As a teacher, mother and grandmother, I understand the importance of a quality education. I sent my two children to D.C. public schools and remain committed to our neighborhood schools.
I pledge that as mayor I will work with parents, teachers, principals, the School Board and superintendent to get results.
As a former social studies teacher at Eastern High School , I know that a quality education starts in the classroom. That understanding is at the center my education policy. My goal is to make sure every child in D.C. public schools has an opportunity to succeed, is taught by a quality teacher, and every classroom is a safe environment conductive for learning.
When I am Mayor, together, we will create this change by:
PROVIDING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Make available pre-kindergarten and kindergarten and expand child care opportunities.
Work with the Superintendent to Create a Principals' Academy to supplement and support knowledge of educational and management best practices for school administrators
Provide incentives to recruit and retain good teachers
Restore a strong vocational program and alternative education that works
Extend learning opportunities outside the classroom with stronger libraries, technology facilities and recreation center programs
DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH ALL AREAS OF EDUCATION
Put failing schools on notice that non-performance will no longer be tolerated and submit to the Council and Congress legislation authorizing the Mayor to take over failing public schools
Advocate for four-year contracts with the Superintendent to create stability and clearly delineate the roles and responsibilities of key authorities impacting education in the District
Create certainty and stability for academic and budgetary planning for principals and teachers by advocating a mandatory enrollment deadline of July 15 and setting just one or two transfer dates throughout the year
Include the Superintendent of Schools in all Cabinet meetings convened by the Mayor and promote cooperation between our schools and other city departments
EMPOWERING PARENTS TO HOLD SCHOOLS ACCOUNTABLE
Help parents hold schools accountable and be active participants in the education of their children
Mobilize the public to support clearly defined learning standards
